What to do in Tahoe/Truckee this Winter (that Isn’t skiing)
Tahoe is definitely known for its iconic ski culture and history (did you know we have 16 ski resorts here?) but Tahoe / Truckee also offers many other winter adventures beyond skiing and riding. If you’re not much of a skier, or looking to rest up your legs, these are some of our favorite things to do in winter.
CROSS COUNTRY SKIING
There’s something about gliding around the XC track while the sun is shining and snow is in the trees on an early, Tahoe morning. Tahoe and Truckee offer plenty of options for Nordic skiers and two of our favorites are in Truckee and Tahoe City. Tahoe Donner (in Truckee) boasts over 100 km of XC ski and snowshoe trails that meander through meadows, over creeks and up to stunning alpine views. The Tahoe XC Center in Tahoe City also offers an incredible trail system with 25+ trails ranging in easy to expert. Climb up to Lakeview for exceptional views of Lake Tahoe.
SNOWMOBILING AROUND TAHOE
For those with a sense of adventure, getting out on a snowmobile in the Tahoe backcountry is one experience you don’t want to miss. With Lake Tahoe Snowmobile, you can break away from the crowds and summit incredible peaks in the basin. Take in the views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding Sierra with 2-hour or 4-hour tours.
SNOWSHOEING IN PAIGE MEADOWS
Have your own snowshoes? A favorite spot for us to enjoy a quiet, leisurely stroll is through Paige Meadows. You won’t find hills here, so if you’re looking to sweat, this probably isn’t the place for you. However, this is a great spot for families and those looking to take it easy. You can easily access this trail in Tahoe City.
ICE SKATING AT NORTHSTAR
Northstar has a fun, festive rink in the heart of the Village. Surrounded by fire pits and seating areas, parents can enjoy a cocktail and the kids can roast s’mores after laps around the rink. Skate rentals are $20 and open daily from 12-8pm. Check here for more details.
SHOPPING & DINING IN DOWNTOWN TRUCKEE
Downtown Truckee is a quintessential western mining town with tons of charm and incredible shopping and dining options. The walkable downtown is a favorite of TEG’s during any season. Don’t miss Pianeta -- an intimate Italian restaurant in the heart of Downtown Truckee. It’s a favorite among locals and visitors, so be sure to call in a reservation.
